Anatomy of a unit price

Where every dollar of your unit cost actually goes

Most founders lose margin because they don’t know what’s negotiable. This is the structure factories use internally when they build a quote. Now you have it too.

Ex-factory price, typical split at the middle of each range100% = your unit price

  • Fabric & trims38–48%Driven by composition, weight (GSM) and certifications. US-made fabric or imported changes this line and your label.
  • Cut, make & trim (CMT)25–38%US labor and construction complexity. The line that moves most with panels, seams and details.
  • Factory margin & overhead8–15%Lower per unit on bigger runs, higher on 100-unit orders.
  • Print, embroidery, wash0–12%Optional. Varies by technique and number of placements.
  • Pattern, grading & sampling4–8%Spread over your run, so it weighs more on small orders.
  • Ground freight to your warehouseadded on topTruck or parcel in 1–5 days across the lower 48. No ocean freight, customs broker or import duty on garments made here.

What a US price includes

A US quote has fewer extras

Compare landed cost, not unit price. A US unit price already covers most of the trip to your door.

  • Stacks of finished dark jeans on a packing table
    01

    No ocean freight

Finished stock goes by truck to the lower 48 in 1–5 days.

  • Tall stacks of cut denim bundles waiting beside the cutting tables
    02

    No import duty

No customs entry and no import tariffs on garments made here. Imported fabric may carry duty, usually built into the factory price.

  • Rows of raw denim jeans standing upright on a factory floor
    03

    Smaller first runs

From 100 units per style, so less cash sits in stock.

  • Two woven labels reading Made in USA with imported materials, one white and one black
    04

    Label wording checked

“Made in USA” or “Made in USA of imported fabric”, checked before bulk.

US production vs importing

Compare the landed cost, not the unit price

An overseas quote looks cheaper per unit. Then freight, brokers, duty and bigger minimums land on top. A US quote already carries most of that.

A US quote already includes

Made here

Cut and sewn in Los Angeles, New York or the Carolinas.

  • Ground delivery in 1–5 days across the lower 48
  • No import duty on the finished garmentsImported fabric may carry duty, usually built into the factory price.
  • Runs from 100 units per style, so you reorder what sells
  • A “Made in USA” label worded to FTC rules
  • A factory you can visit: a drive or a domestic flight away

An overseas quote leaves out

Costs that land after the unit price is agreed.

  • Ocean or air freight to a US port
  • Customs broker fees and import duty on the finished garments
  • Weeks on the water before you can sell
  • Higher minimums, so more cash tied up in stock
  • A flight abroad to see your own production

Our methodology

Why the numbers here are realistic

We don’t guess. The ranges start from typical production benchmarks, are adjusted for US production and are refreshed every quarter.

  • French terry fabric with raw edgeFabric
  • Wide factory floor with lines of work tables under long fluorescent lightsSewing labor
  • Benchmarks, not a scraped price list

Ranges per garment type, reviewed every quarter. Not a price database from 2019.

  • US labor, priced honestly

US cut and sew costs more per unit than overseas. The calculator shows that openly instead of hiding it in an average.

  • Nothing to add at the border

Garments made here carry no ocean freight, customs broker or import duty. Add ground freight to your warehouse and you have the landed cost.

  • What quotes don’t show

Fabric, trims, MOQ tier and complexity, broken out line by line. Factories rarely do that, so you can plan each line.

  • Short runs, not averages

Quantity tiers start at 100 pieces per style, our minimum, so a first run is priced as a first run.

  • Independent

We take no commission from factories, so no range is nudged toward a factory that pays us.

It gives you a planning range, not a quote. The ranges start from typical production benchmarks for each garment type and are adjusted for US production. Your real price depends on the factory, the fabric, trims and a complete tech pack. Send the brief to get the real number.

The ex-factory price per piece: fabric, cut, make and trim, plus the extras you tick. It leaves out ground freight to your warehouse, which takes 1 to 5 days across the lower 48. There is no import duty to add on garments made here.

US labor costs more per unit. The gap closes when you compare landed cost: no ocean freight, no customs broker, no duty on the finished garments, and a 100-unit run instead of 500 or 1,000.

For a binding factory quote, yes: measurements, bill of materials, stitch types, labels and packaging. To send us a brief, a sketch or photo is enough. Our tech pack service is $79 per style, delivered in 3 to 5 working days with 2 to 3 revision rounds.

Most US cut-and-sew factories we work with start at 100 units per style. Below that, New York sample rooms can make samples and very small runs, at a higher price per piece. Put your quantity in the brief and we’ll point you to the right option.

Send the brief. We place it with a US factory that already makes this garment, in the hub built for it: Los Angeles, New York or the Carolinas. Or contact factories yourself with the US Factory Directory for $49.
